Friends' Club Canada- Session D Week 2

Friends Club Canada
Session D: Week five

First Group:

Today in Friends Club we began by discussing the different types of humour and their importance in making friends.  Today’s activity centered on the Rebus Puzzles, an  ‘intelligent form of humour’ where you have to use your wits.  The Rebus puzzles require you to think ‘outside the box’. The following is an example of a puzzle we asked the group to solve: on the white board we have written down ‘JOBINJOB’.  The answer to this riddle is, [drum roll] …‘In between Jobs’.  With minimal prompting our friends figured out a few of these and it was insightful to observe how quickly they could do so.  However when asked to create one, even as a group, our friends became frustrated and stumped. One friend said “all this thinking is making my brain hurt”.  A friend then suggested it was time to “rest our brains” and show “creativity by acting out an improv”.  So as a group, the friends entertained us with some creative and amusing improv.

Second Group:

Today in Friends Club we had a discussion about the different types of humour and why humour can be so important socially. One friend mentioned that humour “can even help you get a girlfriend”.  We agreed that it helps to have a sense of humour when you are in a relationship. Today’s activity involved Oxymorons and it was insightful to discover how many of our friends not only knew the definition but also immediately came up with examples.  We had fun thinking up examples, even though a couple of our friends used ‘Young Gioia’ as an illustration!!

Because this group enjoys riddles, we worked on the Rebus Puzzles described above in the first group. The friends really enjoyed the challenges of solving the riddles and then creating their own. They are a very clever group.
